Session 1

Introduction to Bertolt Brecht and some key terms

Verfrmdungseffekt – Strange making, distancing, defamiliarisation

Warm up - "Moody Objects"
Participants create inanimate objects physically then give these an attitude:

Angry - motorbike
Happy - bed
Depressed - chest of draws
Sad - chair
Proud - chair

When viewed by an audience why are these objects strange? - The audience see these as inanimate, therefore they may be confused as to why they are being associated with human properties.
What is the effect on the audience?-  Observing the actor giving physical expression to these objects, initial response would be surprise, followed by confusion.  However, once the actor starts to give 'life' and 'expression' to each object - it would become evident what was being demonstrated.  For example, the motorbike roars loudly (just like shouting when you are angry). The chest of drawers groans as each draw is opened and closed, as if in pain.  This would reflect a negative mood - a low moment.
Making a gesture strange

Simple Character creation

Building a character "outside in". Using opposing points of tension create simple characters.

The old man
The pregnant woman
The 'fat cat'

By using the clues of what we can 'see' of the character what can we tell about them and their social context.
What job might they have/had?
Have they have had and easy or hard life? Why?

The 'pregnant woman' waddles around slowly, tentatively  with disjointed movements. As if her body is no longer her own.  She e is elegantly dressed - giving the impression of someone who has acquired wealth and status.  A middle-class professional woman.   She carries a designer handbag.  She was a professional ballet dancer before she became pregnant.  Whilst she walks upright, with light steps, she is frustrated, restricted in her movements because of her large belly.

09/9/2014
We Started off in the morning with a game of I don't believe you, the aim is to shout "I don't believe you" if someone in the class doesn't react to a certain situation appropriately. A few of my peers went up and then the audience gave constructive criticism as to why we believed them or not.

Ms Goodall then asked us to behave like a character we saw/met on our way to school so I behaved like my friend Omari who I had met that morning. Sarah put us in different scenarios but we were all playing different characters, so things like 'what would this person do if they found £20'. Furthermore, we all got into pairs as our characters and acted out different situations with our partner, my partner and I did a confrontation scene considering Omari is always talking about how he can handle confrontation. He recently purchased a new pair of trainers, the next situation was 'what if this person stood in dog poo' I overacted because omari is a very animated person and if that happened to him he would be extremely angry.

We switched pairs as our character for the final scene, we all had the same lines which consisted mostly of the words "I love you". I got my partner to say it and I reacted awkwardly.

02/09/2014- Theatre Lesson
Today the whole theater form tutor worked together for the day, as mr rennison's took ill.We began in the lecture theater, and explored melodrama. Our task was to devise a piece in groups of 5, we needed to focus on exaggeration in almost every way.

  • loud voice
  • sight set on audience
  • lots of body movement
These were just some of the things that we needed to focus on, my group decided to follow some of the themes that we were working on previously. After our break we resumed in the 'hut' and explored realism and naturalism, we devised our scenes to make it look like everyday situations/occurrences. Every group acted out natural events that would occur in someones everyday life.

The naturalistic scene required us to act out the highlights of our realism piece, following this we changed groups and made our own versions of the cherry orchard in much shorter versions. By the end of the day we had discussed what was required throughout the year in order for us to achieve the maximum grade.
